Til Pitha is a type of pancake filled with Sesame seeds. It is generally made during Makar Sankranti in Assam.


  1. Glutinous rice (Bora rice) – 500g

  2. Black sesame seeds – 200 gms

  3. Jaggery (or brown sugar) – 300 gms

  4. Water for soaking

Step By Step Method

    • Wash and soak the rice overnight .

    • Drain excess water and leave,covered it in a colander for 2 hours to dry.

    • Grind into a fine powder.

    • Transfer to a bowl.Press the rice powder down firmly.

    • Keep covered with a damp cloth.

    • Lightly roast the sesame seeds.Grind to a coarse powder.

    • Grate the jaggery and mix with the sesame seeds

    • Heat a frying pan in medium flame and take a ladle of rice powder, place it

    • in the middle of the pan and spread to a size of small pancake with the back of a spoon

    • (or by tapping with your fingertips)

    • Place the jaggery and sesame mix in the centre.

    • Allow the rice to “set” slightly and fold into a cylindrical roll using a palette knife .

    • Turn over and remove from fire. Make sure the rice does not brown; it should remain white.

    • Remove from heat and serve with Assam Tea.
