This Mauritian dish is inspired from the Indian diaspora who have settled for several generations in Mauritius. These deep fried fritters are made with dal and the main flavour is spring onions, which give a lovely mellow taste and add another dimension to it!


250g split peas/Chana Dal 4-6 fresh green or red chillies 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves 4 tbsp finely chopped spring onion Salt to tastes 1 whole cumin seeds Oil for deep frying

Step By Step Method

  • Clean the Dal and soak in water for 3-4 hours. Drain the water from the Dal by placing in a sieve and allowing to drain for a few minutes. Put the drained Dal in a blender and blend into a coarse paste using little or no water. Add all the other ingredients to the dal paste and mix well together. Add a little bit of water if necessary. Heat oil to a medium heat and shape dal mixture into small balls and deep fry in batches until golden brown. Serve with any chutney or Ketchup of your choice.
