Simple, wholesome, popular, traditional South Indian breakfast dish with mild flavours!

For main dish : 750 gms rice ottu shavige or noodles (I've used the one that is available fresh from V V Puram- no need to cook this), 200 gms boiled fresh green peas (now in season), 3-4 green chillies, 1/4" ginger, few curry leaves and few sprigs of coriander leaves, juice of 1/2 lemon. For tempering: 2-3 tsp til oil, 1 tsp Mustard, 2 tsp Split Urad dal, 1 tsp Split Chana dal, broken cashews, 1/2 tsp turmeric, salt as per taste.

Heavy bottomed Wok/kadai

Step By Step Method

  • In a big wok/kadai, roast the broken cashew pieces in ghee till golden, remove and keep aside to be added in the end. Add til oil, when hot add mustard and when splutters add urad dal and chana dal. To this add the already cooked peas, finely chopped green chillies and ginger, curry leaves and turmeric. Saute for 1-2 mins. Add salt and saute and put off the gas. To this tempering add ottu shavige. Sprinkle some water and give it a nice mix till every shavige strand is coloured yellow (water will make the shavige very fluffy). Turn the gas on and cook it for a few minutes 3-4, stirring occasionally. Put off the gas. Squeeze lemon juice, add coriander and cashews and give it a good mix. I have not added grated coconut, however adding this will add to the taste. I served this with Pudina chutney. You can serve it as it is or with any chutney.
