  • One cup of Tuvar dal (soaked for ½ hour)
  • 2 finely chopped Tomatoes
  • 1 Onion sliced
  • 2 Green chillies slit
  • ¾ inch of Ginger juliennes
  • ½ teaspoon of Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon of Red Chilli Powder
  • 2 tablespoons of freshly chopped Coriander leaves
  • Salt
  • 1 teaspoon of crushed Garlic
  • ½ teaspoon of Asafoetida
  • 1 teaspoon of Cumin Seeds
  • Oil for tempering
  • 8-10 Curry leaves

Step By Step Method

  • Step 1

    Pressure cook the tuvar dal in two whistles. Let the pressure come down on its own.

    Step 2

    Heat oil in a pan,  add asafoetida and splutter the cumin seeds.

    Step 3

    Now saute the crushed Garlic for a few seconds.

    Step 4

    Add the chopped onion and saute till pink.

    Step 5

    Add the tomatoes and saute till the oil seeps out.

    Step 6

    Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt and saute for further 2 minutes.

    Step 7

    Now add the tuvar dal, some water, slit green chillies, ginger juliennes and cook for ten minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
