Appam is a Keralian dish, prepared with yeast fermented dosa batter and grated coconut. This traditional dish is a perfect go-to recipe as it takes very less time to prepare and often enjoyed with chutney or kadala curry.

Boiled rice
Dry yeast
Methi (Fenugreek seeds)
Salt as per taste
Grated coconut

Step By Step Method

  • Take a bowl and add 1kg rice. Pour enough water to soak and let it sit for 5-6 hours.
After soaking it, drain the water out.
Take the mixture in a mixer grinder along with grated coconut and blend a fine paste. (Add water as required to make the paste)
In a small bowl, put dry yeast. Add warm water and sugar to it.
Transfer the blended batter into the yeast water. Mix well and allow it to ferment overnight.
Before preparing Appam, add salt as per your taste.
Heat a pan and pour a ladleful of batter on to the medium-hot pan.
Cover the lid and simmer till the appam gets cooked well. Serve it hot with chutney or kadala curry.
